Developing an online search tool for the metaphor corpus
Over the five past years the metaphor research group has built the 'VU Amsterdam Metaphor Corpus', which contains almost 200,000 lexical units coded for metaphor. The corpus covers four registers: conversation, fiction, academic texts and newspaper texts and has been published as a downloadable xml file at the Oxford Text Archive. Our current effort is to make the corpus accessible to a wider audience. I will report on the development of a user-friendly, easy-to-use online search tool combining the corpus and a metaphor lexicon. The search tool will be embedded in a website that offers background information on the corpus, the building of the corpus, the method, and training material. I will also make suggestions for future expansion.
